Hello, my name is Barney Gammon, or as most of my friends call me, Bam! I live in Northern Ohio and take advantage of every opportunity to get in my boat! Crappie Fishing : The Addiction, The Details, The Reward
For me personally, Crappie might as well be written as Cocaine as I find myself consistently chasing the high! The entire experience is an adrenaline filled masterpiece of Da Vinci proportions. I typically plan each trip with finite detail, even though sometimes infinite speed bumps arise. Each trip starts for me by looking at the weather.

I typically check three different apps in hopes that the law of averages will give me enough guidance to make a sound decision. How much wind? Any precipitation? Temperature? Pressure? Sunrise time? Sunset time? From there I must decide how far I’m willing to travel, and which direction best suites the forecast. Big Crappie? Large number of Crappie?
New Water, New Thrills, The Joys of Crappie Fishing
New to me water often plays into the decision as well. Do I plan on catch and release, or feed the family fishing? One by one destinations are eliminated until the location of the next fix is determined. Sometimes that decision doesn’t occur until the shoulder of the highway just before an interstate on ramp. In any case, watching my boat draft my truck like a member of the famous Shake and Bake race team gets the ole ticker thumping like a drumline! From the moment the trailer lights get plugged in to the truck until the boat glides into the water the anticipation is palpable! I always park the truck and trailer and hurry back to the boat with a giddiness that is almost unrivaled in my day-to-day activities. Beep! On goes the electronics! Beep! Engine fires up! Like looking at level on Super Mario World, the fishing maps hold the key to the castle!
Navigating for Success in Crappie Fishing
Navigation becomes goal #1 until I hit the honey hole, at least I hope it is the honey hole! The sun glistens off the rippling waves as Eagles and Osprey sore high above. The leaves of the trees do a little dance that almost invites you to swing on by. The modern-day pterodactyls squawk in the distance almost to warn you that you’re too close for their Blue Herring Crane comfort! Canada Geese obnoxiously honk at you like stand still traffic on the Los Angeles I-10. One of the most telling signs of pending success is the baitfish boiling on the surface like bacon in a cast iron skillet!
